This article discusses the use of long cables on Elo monitors and the recommended lengths
A common question is, "How far away from the computer can the touch monitor be?" The answer, of course, is, "It depends."
Serial touch cables: Six feet is the standard length of all Elo supplied Serial touch cables. The spec on serial cable length is something like, "As far as it can be run without degrading signal quality significantly." In practice, several of our customers have run serial cables 200 to 400 feet without problems.
USB 1.0, 2.0 touch cables: Six feet is the standard length of all Elo Supplied USB touch cables unless otherwise noted on the product spec page. The industry spec on USB 2.0 is no more than five meters between powered hubs, five hubs max. So by default you can go approximately 15 feet, and with a single powered hub you can go approximately 30 feet. Powered hubs are a common item, widely available. To go longer distances, you might want to consider a third party USB extender.
USB Type-C specification recommends a maximum cable length of 4 meters (approx 13 feet) for passive cables. This information is from the official USB Type-C Specification, section 3.1.3 Compliant USB Type-C to Legacy Cable Assemblies Generally speaking, the shorter the cable, the better transmission rate when it comes to USB-C. Elo's recommendation is to never exceed 6-feet on USB-C connections. Longer cable lengths may not allow the transfer of video, data, and audio. Elo P/N: E710364 is recommended for use on all Elo products.
Video cables: Six feet is the de facto standard for all Elo supplied video cables.
- VGA cables can reliably transmit video signals up to a distance of about 50-feet without significant signal degradation. Beyond this distance, the quality of the signal will deteriorate, possibly resulting in reduced image quality, ghosting, or other visual artifacts. If you must run long VGA cables, you will want to look into getting special 3rd party cables. Video cable amplifiers are also available from third parties.

HDMI cable limits vary depending on the generation cable used. Typically a shorter cable with give the best results.
- HDMI 1.4 and earlier versions, the maximum supported length is approximately 50-feet.
- HDMI 2.0 and later version, the maximum supported length is approximately 65-feet.
-
DisplayPort cable limits vary depending on the generation cable used.
- DisplayPort 1.2 and earlier versions support approximately 10-feet.
- DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 can reliably support signals up to approximately 6.5-feet.
- USB-C cable length specs vary depending upon which generation cable is used. Please refer to USB.org for their official cable specifications for USB-C.
Power cables: Six feet is the standard length of all Elo supplied AC power cables unless otherwise noted on the product spec page. You can use longer AC power cables as long as they meet the required power input specification of the Elo product. Elo does not recommend extending any DC power cables between a power brick and the product, as this may cause the cable to overheat and damage the product. Using extended DC power cables will also void the Elo warranty.
