This article describes some of the key differences between Android AOSP and android GMS
I keep hearing the terms "AOSP" and "GMS" whenever I am working with Android devices. What do those terms mean? When working with Elo Android devices, you may notice two different terms mentioned frequently; AOSP and GMS.
- AOSP = Android Open Source Project. These devices are not certified with Google Play Services.
- GMS = Google Mobile Services. GMS is a suite of Google-developed applications and APIs that build upon the AOSP. These devices are certified with Google Play Services.
GMS provides features like Google Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail, and YouTube, which are not included in a pure AOSP build.
Elo's AOSP devices cannot be upgraded to GMS devices. Certification is performed on the hardware of the device. Therefore, there is separate hardware used on the AOSP and GMS devices.
If you require Google Play Services you should look for Elo devices with the description "with Google Play Services." See screenshot below of our current Android offerings:
