This article outlines the reason some monitors will not function with only a USB-C cable.
Not all computers or devices support 12V power output through USB-C or Thunderbolt ports. Power Delivery (PD) support is determined by the computer manufacturer, and many devices are limited to standard USB functionality—data, video, and 5V power only. This is insufficient to power a 12V monitor.
If you're unable to power a USB-C device from your computer, review the following:
1. Does your device support USB-C or Thunderbolt Power Delivery?
-
Check your computer’s technical specifications or contact the manufacturer to confirm Power Delivery capability.
2. Are you using a laptop or portable device?
-
Laptops must be connected to AC power to output power via USB-C. They typically cannot provide power while running on battery alone.
3. Are you using a power-capable USB-C cable?
-
Not all USB-C cables support power delivery. Lower-cost cables often support data and video only.
-
Elo recommends using the approved USB-C to USB-C Cable Kit (Elo P/N: E710364), which supports data, video, and power.
4. Does your system require BIOS or firmware updates?
-
Some systems need BIOS settings adjusted or firmware updates to enable Power Delivery over USB-C or Thunderbolt. Refer to your system manufacturer for guidance.
5. Does your computer lack Power Delivery support?
-
If your system does not support Power Delivery, use the AC adapter provided with your Elo product.
6. Is your Elo product designed for USB-C power?
-
Only select Elo models support power input via USB-C or Thunderbolt. Confirm compatibility on the product spec sheet.
