How Do I Update the Chromium WebView Controller on My EloView Device? (EV3)

This article explains how to deploy the Chromium 74 WebView Controller to an EloView device and configure a web application to use the updated web engine.

⚠ Important – EloView 3 End of Service and Platform Compatibility

This article applies only to EloView 3 (EV3) devices running Android 7 or Android 8.

EloView 3 (EV3) was decommissioned in July 2026 and is no longer supported. Customers should migrate to EloView 4 (EV4) for continued device management, security updates, and platform support.
The Chromium 74 WebView Controller applies only to devices running Android 7 and Android 8.
Devices running Android 10 and later are Google Mobile Services (GMS) enabled and use the Chrome WebView engine delivered through Google Play services. These devices do not require the Chromium 74 WebView Controller described in this article.

ℹ Overview
Some web applications require Chromium WebView version 74 for compatibility. This procedure walks you through downloading the Chromium WebView APK, uploading it to EloView, creating a Smart App Bundle, and deploying it to an EloView device.

Requirements

An EloView account with permission to manage content.
An EloView-connected device.
Chromium 74 WebView APK.
A web application (URL) to deploy.

Step 1 – Upload the Web Application

Sign in to your EloView account.
Select Contents.
Click the + button in the App Library.
Select URL.
Enter the following information:
- Website name
- Website URL
- Website icon (optional)
- Description
Click Add Content.
Double-click the newly created web application.
Click Edit.
Configure the following settings:
- Web View Type: Native
- User Agent: Device Default
Save the changes.

Step 2 – Upload the Chromium WebView APK

From Contents, click the + button.
Select Application (APK).
Complete the application information:
- Application name
- Select the downloaded Chromium 74 APK
- Application icon (optional)
- Description
Click Add Content.

Step 3 – Create a Smart App Bundle

Click the + button in the App Library.
Select SMART APPS.
Select Bundle as the Smart App type.
Select your web application as the Foreground Application.
Select the Chromium 74 APK as the Background Application.
Do not enable the "Run" option for the background application.
Click Add Content.

⚠ Important
When creating the Smart App Bundle, leave the Run option unchecked for the Chromium WebView APK. The APK is installed in the background and should not be launched as the foreground application.

Step 4 – Publish the Bundle

From Contents, drag and drop the Smart App Bundle onto the desired EloView device.
Click Yes to confirm deployment.
Allow the device time to install the bundle.

Step 5 – Verify the WebView Version

Open the device Control Panel by pressing the appropriate hardware button combination.
Select Android Settings.
Open Apps.
Select Android System WebView.
Verify that the installed version begins with 74.

💡 Tip
After verifying that Chromium WebView version 74 is installed, launch your web application from EloView to confirm it is using the updated web engine.

⚠ Troubleshooting

Verify that the Chromium 74 APK uploaded successfully before creating the Smart App Bundle.
Confirm the Smart App Bundle uses the web application as the foreground application and the Chromium APK as the background application.
If the WebView version does not update, redeploy the bundle or restart the device.
Verify the installed Android System WebView version under Android Settings.
