EloView devices require secure outbound access to cloud services for device registration, management, app and content updates, and push notifications. Some customers request a list of fixed URLs or IP addresses for firewall allow-listing. While this is a valid security approach, it can lead to service disruption in modern cloud environments when those IPs or URLs change.
When static IP addresses or fixed URLs are not available due to the dynamic nature of cloud services, Elo recommends whitelisting service-specific domain patterns. This provides the best balance of security, reliability, and maintainability. Major cloud providers, including AWS, Google, and Microsoft, endorse this approach because cloud services scale dynamically and backend endpoints update over time.
Benefits of domain-based whitelisting:
- Prevents outages caused by IP or URL rotation
- Reduces emergency firewall updates
- Ensures consistent and reliable device connectivity
