How do I update the firmware on a 2218 controller?

Updating Firmware on the Elo AccuTouch® 2218 Touch Controller (EloDFU Utility)

This article provides the technical procedure for flashing and updating the firmware on an Elo AccuTouch® 2218 5-wire resistive touch controller using the EloDFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) utility.

⚠️ Legacy Compatibility Notice: This is a legacy servicing procedure specifically designed for Windows XP environments utilizing legacy Elo single-touch driver packages and USB DFU bootloader drivers. Ensure all prerequisite packages are downloaded before initiating the flash process.

System Requirements & Downloads

Required Hardware:

  • Elo AccuTouch 2218 Touch Controller (integrated or standalone).
  • Windows XP test PC or workbench system.
  • USB touch cable connecting the monitor/controller to the host PC (external video connection is optional during flashing).

Step-by-Step Firmware Flashing Procedure

Phase 1: Environment Preparation & Driver Setup

  1. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 on the Windows XP computer.
  2. Extract and install the EloDFU utility installer.
  3. Connect the monitor containing the 2218 controller to the Windows XP PC via USB. Ensure the monitor has main AC power connected and powered ON.
  4. Install the Elo Single-Touch XPU4.8.7b driver.
  5. Confirm that WINUSB.DLL exists in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\. If missing, copy the dynamic-link library into that path manually.

Phase 2: Executing EloDFU Flash

  1. Navigate to the installation directory:
    C:\Program Files\Tyco Electronics\DfuSetup\
  2. Double-click EloDfu.exe to launch the firmware upgrade wizard.

  3. If active controllers are detected, select the target controller’s Serial Number from the list and click OK.

    Note: If the tool indicates no controllers found, the 2218 controller may already be residing in bootloader/DFU mode.
  4. Verify in Windows Device Manager that the controller is recognized under DFU Mode (e.g., Elo DFU Device).
  5. In the EloDFU utility interface, click the Choose button.
  6. Browse to and select the APPLICATION.DFU firmware binary file.
  7. Click Upgrade to begin writing firmware to the EEPROM.
  8. Allow the flashing routine to complete uninterrupted. The progress bar will cycle through write and verify sequences.
  9. When the process finishes, the utility will display: "Upgrade successful!"
  10. Click Quit to safely exit the EloDFU program.

Post-Update Verification

Open the Elo Touchscreen Properties Control Panel (or EloConfig) and check the Controller Information tab to confirm the 2218 controller reports the updated firmware revision.

✔ Flash Complete: The Elo AccuTouch 2218 touch controller is updated and ready for production deployment.
