This article discusses if Elo offers any OCR capable barcode scanners
A common question is: Does Elo sell barcode scanners that are capable of OCR scanning?
The short answer is yes. Please see below information for details.
What is OCR?
Optical character recognition (OCR) is a technology that changes printed documents into digital image files. It is a digital copy machine that utilizes automation to transform a scanned document into machine-readable PDFs that you can edit and share. An example of OCR would be when you scan a receipt with your computer. Your computer will then save the scan as an image. While you cannot search, edit, or count the words in the image, you can use OCR to change the image to a text document with the content saved as text. OCR programs can pull data from camera images, image-only PDFs, and scanned documents. It makes static content adjustable and eliminates the need for data to be entered manually. OCR Capable Barcode Scanners
Elo barcode scanners: E384627, and E454122, are integrated with Zebra's SE4720 scan engine which is equipped with their PL5000 decoder, which has OCR capabilities.
Programming
To use these scanners as an OCR device, one must first program their desired OCR parameters into the scanner, either by scanning programming barcodes from Zebra or using Zebra's 123Scan Utility. Please refer to the attached .pdf which contains pages 380-412 of the PL5000 Integration Guide concerning OCR programming.
To understand the OCR parameters, please refer to Zebra's OCR Params documentation and the Zebra Barcode Scanner SDK page.
Software
In addition to programming the barcode scanner for OCR capabilities, software is needed to capture the data being scanned. Some examples are: Microsoft OneNote, SimpleOCR, or Google Docs, to name a few. Elo does not provide or support OCR software.
If you are unfamiliar with programming barcode scanners, please reach out to one of Elo's Software Partners for help.
