Out-of-the-Box Behavior
When you first connect your scanner via USB, you'll experience the following:
Initial Connection
- The scanner emits three audible beeps to confirm power and successful initialization
-
On Windows PC, you may see a notification in the lower-right taskbar:
"Device is ready. Symbol Bar Code Scanner::EA is set up and ready to go."
Visual Indicators
- The SE4720 scanner's red illumination LED remains constantly on in a trapezoid-shaped pattern
- The SE4107 scanner's white illumination LED remains constantly on in a trapezoid-shaped pattern
Scanning Operation
- When motion or an object passes in front of the sensor, the laser aimer activates automatically
- Upon successful barcode scan, the scanner emits an audible beep
- Configuration barcodes are included in the QIG
Above barcodes are included in the Quick Installation Guide (QIG) that ships with the SE4720 and SE4107 Barcode Scanners
Factory Default Settings
SNAPI with Imaging Interface
Both the SE4720 and SE4107 come factory-configured to use SNAPI (Symbol Native API) over USB. This advanced protocol enables:
- Barcode data transmission
- Access to image capture and diagnostic features
- Configuration and firmware management via Zebra's software tools
Note: SNAPI requires Zebra drivers or the Zebra Scanner SDK to be installed on the host system. Without this support, barcode data will not appear in text fields such as Notepad or browser input boxes.
Presentation Mode
In Presentation Mode, the scanner operates hands-free:
- Automatically activates aimer and illumination when detecting motion or a barcode
- No trigger press or software command required
- Ideal for hands-free applications including kiosks, fixed-mount setups, or countertop installations
Using Keyboard Emulation Mode
If your system does not support the SNAPI protocol, you can switch to USB Keyboard HID Emulation Mode to make barcode data appear in open text fields.
Configuration Steps
- Locate the Quick Installation Guide (QIG) included with your Elo/Zebra scanner
- Scan only the barcode labeled "USB Keyboard HID" in the guide
- Do not scan any additional barcodes in the QIG
This setting converts the scanner to behave like a standard USB keyboard, sending scanned barcode data as keystrokes.
Note: To configure the SE4720 or SE4107 for Keyboard HID Emulation Mode, enable Presentation Mode, and automatically add an Enter keystroke after each scan, you can either scan the custom barcode labels attached to this article or use 123Scan to upload the custom configuration files also attached to this article.
Restoring Factory Defaults
To return the scanner to its original configuration:
- Open the Quick Installation Guide (QIG)
- Scan the "Restore Defaults" barcode provided in the guide
This will reset all settings, including the communication interface and mode, to the original factory state.
Using Zebra's 123Scan Utility
Scanner Model Recognition
When configuring with Zebra's 123Scan utility:
- The SE4720 will appear as Model: PL500DL (not SE4720)
- You may receive an error stating "This scanner does not have a valid plug-in available."
- If the above error is received, please visit the following article: Why am I getting Barcode Scanner, Plug-in Not Available Error with SE4720 Scanners?
- The SE4107 will appear as SE4107 but may also display an error message: "This scanner does not have a valid plug-in available."
- If the above errorr is received, please visit the following article: Why am I getting "This scanner does not have a valid plug-in available" error with SE4107 Scanners?
