This article provides steps to orient an Elo monitor in portrait mode
A common question is: "Can I orient my Elo touchmonitor in portrait mode instead of landscape?"
Answer: Yes, see below for more details.
Video Rotation
Touchmonitors are considered "slave devices," meaning they respond to commands being sent from another device such as a computer, laptop, tablet, or other controller. The touchmonitor does not have any built in capabilities to rotate the video. It cannot be accomplished through the onscreen display (OSD) menu (see the end of this article for OSD information).
For the touchmonitor to be placed into portrait mode, you must setup your computer's video graphics card to output in portrait mode. In most Windows systems you would go to Start Settings System Display and choose either portrait or landscape from a drop-down list. If you are running a different OS such as Linux, Mac, or Android, please consult your computer manufacturer's instructions on how to rotate video.
- After placing the touchmonitor in portrait mode, you may need to re-align the touchscreen for it to respond correctly.
Desktop Monitor Mounting in Portrait Mode
All standard aspect ratio touchmonitors (square monitors) can be mounted in portrait mode on the stand, as these monitors have a square dimension.
On wide screen desktop monitors, it may not be possible to mount in portrait mode on the desktop stand due to the dimensions of the monitor in conjunction with the allowable space between the stand and the desktop.
Below shows a wide screen 2202L touchmonitor mounted in portrait mode on the desktop stand. Notice the lack of available travel when mounted this way. The bottom of the monitor is sitting on the tabletop no allowing the touchmonitor to be placed in a full upright position.
All Elo monitors are equipped with a standard VESA mount on the backside, some are 75mm, some are 100mm, and some have both. The VESA mount allows you to remove the stand and mount the monitor to any VESA compliant mount, ie: wall mount, arm mount, etc.
Below shows the 100mm VESA mount on the back of an Elo ET2203LM desktop touchmonitor.
- Always check the User's Manual of your Elo touchmonitor for information on proper mounting.
Open Frame and IDS Touchmonitor Mounting in Portrait Mode
Open frame and IDS touchmonitors are designed to be mounted in either landscape or portrait. The User Manual of the product will show how to properly orient the touchmonitor for proper ventilation, see below example from the 3263L/4363L Series IDS User Manual:
OSD Information
All Elo touchmonitors have an Onscreen Display Menu (OSD). Some touchmonitors have the ability to rotate the text of the OSD menu (not the display video). This allows you to orient the OSD menu in the same orientation as the video display for ease of use. See example below for ET1099L Open Frame touchmonitor:
Monitor with video rotated to portrait but OSD menu is still in the default landscape mode
We enter into the OSD section, then OSD Rotation
Select Portrait from the menu
The OSD menu is now in Portrait mode to match the video
