How to Configure MSR Reader for Encryption

In this help article, we'll walk you through the steps to set up and configure your Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) on a Windows PC. We'll cover the entire process, from connecting the MSR reader to installing the necessary software and configuring it for encryption.
Before we begin, sharing a few basic default settings, features and configuration options:
Default Settings:
- Enabled for Security Level 2 (Non-encryption)
- Enabled for Keyboard Emulation Mode
- Preloaded with Magensa production key (MPK), KSID 90118800
Features:
- Supports bi-directional card swipe reading
- Supports both Keyboard and HID modes
- Equipped with a micro-USB interface

Instructions
Step 1: Connecting the MSR to a Windows PC
- Plug in your MSR to a Windows PC.
Connection options:
-
- Plugging the MSR directly to an EloPOS or I-Series 2.0 for Windows system
- Connecting the MSR to an Elo monitor connected to a Windows PC
- Using a micro-USB (female) to USB-A cable to connect the MSR to a Windows PC
Step 2: Installing the Configuration Tool and Setting HID Mode
- Open a web browser and go to https://rs.magensa.net/rs2/app/publish.htm
- Click the Install button.
- Save the setup.exe and then install.
- After the installation, a MagTek Reader Configuration Login window will appear.
- Click Use Public Account, or enter your Magensa user account info.
- Verify if the Interface Type is set at 01 - KBE to proceed with the next steps.
- Change the Reader Config Options to MODE_HID.
- Click Change_Config to apply setting.
- Click Refresh to update the Interface Type info.
Step 3: Changing from Security Level 2 to Security Level 3
Please note you will not be able to reverse these changes after setting Security Level 3. PCI compliance policy does not permit downgrading the security level.
- Using the MagTek Reader Configuration tool.
- Verify if the Security Level is set at 02 to proceed with the next steps.
- Change the Reader Config Options to SECLEV_3.
- Click Change Config to apply.
