Elo Android Device Stuck on the Boot Logo or Repeatedly Restarting
This article clarifies the troubleshooting steps for Android devices from Elo — Now part of Zebra Technologies (such as the I-Series, Backpack, or PayPoint) that are experiencing startup failures.
Issue Summary: The Elo Android device powers on but fails to successfully boot into the operating system. The display either freezes on the initial "Elo" or "Android" startup logo, or the device repeatedly restarts (bootloops) without ever reaching the home screen.
Potential Causes
- Software Corruption: Often caused by an interrupted or failed Over-The-Air (OTA) OS update.
- Power Issues: Inadequate power delivery from a failing or incorrect power supply.
- Peripheral Conflicts: Faulty connected USB devices or SD cards halting the boot sequence.
- Hardware Failure: Internal component degradation requiring physical repair.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Verify the Power Supply: A weak or malfunctioning power adapter can cause a device to reboot continuously as it attempts to draw more power during the boot sequence. Ensure the power cable is securely plugged into both the device and a working wall outlet. Verify you are using the original Elo OEM power adapter with the correct voltage and amperage. Test with a known-good power supply to rule out adapter failure.
- Disconnect External Peripherals: A malfunctioning peripheral or corrupted storage drive can interrupt the Android bootloader. Unplug all connected peripherals (e.g., USB barcode scanners, receipt printers, flash drives, SD cards) and power cycle the device. If it boots successfully, reconnect the peripherals one by one to identify the faulty device.
- Perform a Hard Power Cycle: Disconnect the device completely from its power source. Wait at least 60 seconds to allow internal capacitors to fully discharge. Reconnect the power and attempt to turn the device back on.
Critical Data Warning: The following step involves a Hardware Factory Reset, which will permanently erase all user data and restore the device to its factory settings. It should only be used if the previous steps fail.
-
Perform a Hardware Factory Reset (Android System Recovery):
- Unplug the power from the device.
- Hold the HOME key and reconnect power.
- Continue holding the HOME key until the unit starts the Android System Recovery menu.
- Press the HOME key to navigate to and highlight "wipe data/factory reset".
- Press the POWER key to select it.
- Press the HOME key to navigate until "YES - delete all user data" is selected.
- Press the POWER key to confirm the selection.
- After the data wipe is complete, press the POWER key to select "reboot system now".
- Escalate for Repair (RMA): If the device cannot enter the Android Recovery menu, or if a factory reset does not resolve the bootloop, the unit likely has a critical hardware failure. The device should be escalated to the RMA team: (Return Merchandise Authorization).
