Resolving macOS 12.3+ Driver Installation Failure (Python 2.7 Deprecation & UPDD v735)

Users attempting to install legacy Elo macOS touch drivers (Universal Pointer Device Driver / UPDD) on macOS Monterey 12.3 or higher may experience silent installer failures where the software fails to load properly.

Root Cause & Failure Symptoms

Legacy UPDD installers released before March 23, 2022 (specifically version 735 installer builds) rely on the Python 2.7 runtime for post-install configuration scripts. Starting with macOS 12.3 Monterey, Apple completely removed Python 2.7 from the operating system.

Observed Failure Symptoms:

• The installer appears to finish, but the touch driver does not load into memory.
• The UPDD Daemon menu bar icon is missing.
• The UPDD Commander tray icon displays an exclamation mark (!) indicating it cannot establish communication with the driver API.

Step 1: Completely Uninstall the Legacy Driver

Before installing updated driver packages, remove the broken legacy version:

1. Open Finder and navigate to:
   /Library/Application Support/UPDD/

2. Double-click and run the UPDD Uninstaller.

Step 2: Download & Install the Updated macOS Driver

1. Download the latest updated macOS touch driver package from the Elo macOS Touch Drivers Portal.
2. Run the installer following the UPDD Quick Installation Guide.
3. ⚠️ Required macOS Permissions: During installation, macOS will prompt for system security approvals. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security (or Security & Privacy) and grant permissions to allow the UPDD driver system extensions and accessibility controls to operate.
