This article describes why the Windows XP Embedded serial touch driver installs (but does not allow monitor to function), but the USB touch driver does not install when PCAP, IR, or IntelliTouch Plus touch monitors are connected.
Microsoft ended support for Windows XP Embedded on January 12, 2016. Elo does not develop, test, or validate drivers for modern touch technologies on Windows XP Embedded. Customers using PCAP, IR, or IntelliTouch Plus touch monitors should migrate to a currently supported operating system whenever possible.
Customers may observe that the legacy Elo Windows XP Embedded serial touch driver installs successfully when a PCAP, IR, or IntelliTouch Plus touch monitor is connected, while the USB touch driver installation fails or does not detect the touchscreen.
This behavior is expected and is the result of differences in how the legacy serial and USB drivers identify and communicate with touch hardware.
Why does the serial driver install?
The legacy serial touch driver was designed to communicate with touch controllers through a standard RS232 serial interface. During installation, the driver performs minimal hardware validation and can often be installed regardless of the connected touch technology.
However, a successful installation does not indicate that the driver is compatible with or capable of operating PCAP, IR, or IntelliTouch Plus touchscreens. In most cases, the driver simply installs because it does not verify that a supported touch controller is present.
Why does the USB driver fail to install?
The legacy Windows XP Embedded USB touch driver was designed to detect and communicate with specific USB touch controllers supported at the time the operating system was released.
During installation, the driver searches for compatible USB device identifiers (VID/PID values). PCAP, IR, and IntelliTouch Plus touch controllers utilize newer HID-compliant USB architectures and multi-touch frameworks that are not recognized by the legacy Windows XP Embedded USB driver.
As a result, the installer cannot locate a supported device and either prevents installation entirely or installs without providing touch functionality.
Modern Elo PCAP, IR, and IntelliTouch Plus touch monitors rely on HID-compliant USB touch architectures and operating system touch frameworks introduced after Windows XP Embedded was released. These technologies require operating system support that is not available in Windows XP Embedded.
Operating System Limitation
In addition to driver compatibility limitations, Windows XP Embedded does not include the HID touch framework and operating system components required to support modern multi-touch technologies.
Even if a driver could be installed, the operating system cannot provide the functionality necessary for proper operation of PCAP, IR, or IntelliTouch Plus touchscreens.
Summary
- The serial driver may install because it does not require detection of a supported USB touch controller during installation.
- The USB driver requires compatible legacy USB touch hardware and does not recognize the HID-compliant touch controllers used by PCAP, IR, and IntelliTouch Plus touch monitors.
- Even if the serial driver installs successfully, it does not provide support for PCAP, IR, or IntelliTouch Plus touch technology on Windows XP Embedded.
- Windows XP Embedded lacks the operating system framework required to support modern HID-compliant and multi-touch technologies.
If Windows XP Embedded is required for your application, Elo recommends using a supported single-touch technology such as IntelliTouch® or AccuTouch® touch monitors. These touch technologies were designed during the Windows XP Embedded era and are compatible with the legacy Elo touch drivers available for that operating system.
PCAP, IR, and IntelliTouch Plus touch technologies require modern HID-compliant touch frameworks and operating system support that are not available in Windows XP Embedded.
PCAP, IR, and IntelliTouch Plus touch monitors are not supported on Windows XP Embedded. Elo recommends using Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, or another currently supported operating system to ensure proper touch functionality and ongoing security support.
