This article explains why monitors may turn black in direct sunlight
An LCD in direct sunlight will cause the LCD’s to reach their clearing point. This is the temperatures at which the liquid crystal fluid changes from a nematic state into an isotropic state. An LCD will turn totally black at this temperature and be unreadable.
