Why Are Mobile Phones Not Supported with Elo Touch Monitors?
Audience: Elo Customers, Resellers, and Distributors
Article type: External Support Reference / FAQ
This article explains why smartphones, including Android phones and Apple iPhones, are not officially supported as host devices for Elo touchscreen monitors.
Overview
Elo touchscreen monitors are designed to operate with compatible computers and host systems that support the necessary video, USB touch, and power requirements.
Although many smartphones have USB-C connections and support external displays, Elo does not guarantee compatibility or proper touchscreen operation when connecting a mobile phone directly to an Elo touch monitor.
Why Mobile Phones May Not Work with Elo Touch Monitors
1. USB-C Does Not Guarantee Video Compatibility
Not all smartphones support video output through their USB-C ports. For a phone to display an image on an Elo USB-C monitor, it must support a compatible external video output protocol, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode).
Many smartphones use USB-C primarily for charging and data transfer. Simply having a USB-C connection does not mean the phone can output video to an external monitor.
2. Touchscreen Input Requires USB HID Support
Elo touchscreen monitors communicate touch information to the connected host through USB Human Interface Device (HID) protocols or supported touch drivers.
For touchscreen functionality to operate correctly, the connected device must recognize the external touchscreen and properly process its touch coordinates:
- Android Phones: Although Android supports USB HID touchscreen devices, support for external touchscreen input varies by phone manufacturer, Android version, and device configuration. Even when video output works, touch functionality is not guaranteed.
- Apple iPhones: Apple iOS does not support Elo external touchscreen functionality. An iPhone may display video on a compatible external monitor, but touching the Elo screen will not control the iPhone.
Elo does not provide smartphone-specific touch drivers to enable unsupported functionality.
3. Mobile Phones May Not Provide Sufficient Power
Some Elo USB-C touch monitors require the connected host to supply power, video, and USB touch data through a single cable.
Smartphones may be unable to provide the power required to operate these monitors. Depending on the phone and monitor model, this may prevent the monitor from powering on or functioning correctly.
4. Adapters and Screen Mirroring Do Not Guarantee Touch Functionality
Connecting a smartphone through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, docking station, or other video accessory may allow an image to appear on a compatible Elo monitor.
However, displaying video and supporting touchscreen input are two separate functions. A video connection alone does not transmit the USB touch information required to control the phone.
Similarly, screen mirroring or wireless casting requires an appropriate receiving device or host system. A standalone Elo monitor does not independently provide wireless screen-casting capabilities.
What If My Mobile Phone Works with an Elo Monitor?
Some smartphones may successfully display video, and certain configurations may even provide limited touchscreen functionality.
However, successful operation does not establish official compatibility or mean that the configuration is supported by Elo.
Functionality may vary or stop working following smartphone operating system updates, firmware changes, or changes to connected adapters and accessories. Elo cannot guarantee compatibility, touchscreen performance, or continued functionality with mobile phones.
Recommended Configuration
For reliable operation, Elo recommends connecting its touchscreen monitors to compatible host computers or supported Elo computing devices that meet the monitor's video, USB touch, and power requirements.
Customers wishing to use a smartphone with an external display should consult their smartphone manufacturer's specifications to determine supported video output and external input capabilities.
