This article explains why touch may work in the monitor’s OSD menu but not respond when connected to a computer, and how to resolve the issue.
Issue
Some Elo IDS touchmonitors have touch capabilities in moniotor's on-screen display (OSD) menu even without a USB cable connected. If you see an issue where the touchscreen responds correctly in the (OSD) menu, but does not respond when connected to a computer, see below troubleshooting steps.
Cause
When touch works in the OSD but not on the computer, it indicates that:
- The touchscreen controller and sensor are working correctly
- The issue is related to the USB connection, operating system, or configuration
Resolution
1. Verify Touch is Detected by the Computer
On Windows systems:
- Open Device Manager
- Expand Human Interface Devices
- Look for HID-compliant touch screen
2. Configure Touch for Multiple Displays (Most Common Fix)
In multi-monitor environments, touch input may be assigned to the wrong display.
- Open Control Panel
- Select Tablet PC Settings
- Click Setup
- Choose Touch input
- Follow the on-screen prompts to map touch to each display
3. Check USB Connections
- Ensure the USB cable is connected from the monitor to the PC
- Only use an Elo manufactured or approved USB cable which allows data, video, and touch.
- Avoid USB hubs if possible
4. Test Without USB Hubs or Use a Powered Hub
If multiple touchscreens are connected:
- Connect each monitor directly to the PC
- Or use a powered USB hub
5. Reinstall or Refresh Touch Drivers
- Open Device Manager
- Remove all HID-compliant touch screen devices
- Restart the computer
- Allow Windows to automatically reinstall drivers
6. Test the Monitor on Another Computer
To isolate the issue:
- Connect the monitor to a different computer
- Use direct USB and video connections
7. Verify Firmware Consistency (Advanced)
If multiple units are affected:
- Check firmware versions across all monitors
- Update firmware if discrepancies are found
Summary
If touch works in the OSD menu but not on the PC, the touchscreen hardware is functioning correctly. The issue is typically caused by:
- Incorrect display mapping
- USB connection or power limitations
- Driver or operating system configuration
Following the steps above will resolve the majority of cases.
