How to Install Windows 11 Pro on an Elo Backpack® with Intel® Purchased Without an Operating System
This article explains how to perform a clean installation of Microsoft Windows 11 Pro on an Elo Backpack® with Intel® that was purchased without an operating system.
Applies To:
- E345165 — Intel N97, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, No OS
- E345966 — Intel Core 3 N355, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, No OS
- E346334 — Intel Core Ultra 5 135U, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, No OS
Elo Backpack models sold without an operating system do not include a Microsoft Windows license or product key. A valid Windows 11 Pro retail, OEM, or volume-license key must be supplied by the customer.
A clean installation deletes existing partitions, files, applications, and settings from the selected drive. Confirm that the correct drive is selected before deleting or formatting any partitions.
What You Will Need
- An Elo Backpack with Intel purchased without an operating system
- A valid Windows 11 Pro license or product key
- A working Windows computer with internet access
- A blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of storage
- A second USB flash drive for the Elo driver pack, recommended
- A USB keyboard and mouse
- A monitor or Elo touch display
- An Ethernet connection, recommended during initial setup
The Elo Backpack with Intel includes TPM 2.0 and supports UEFI Secure Boot. Secure Boot is enabled by default, so Windows 11 should not require BIOS security changes under normal conditions.
Step 1: Create the Windows 11 Installation USB Drive
- On a working Windows computer, insert a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of storage.
- Go to the Microsoft Download Windows 11 page .
- Locate Create Windows 11 Installation Media, and then select Download Now.
- Run the downloaded MediaCreationTool.exe file as an administrator.
- Accept the Microsoft license terms.
- Select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.
- Select the required language and confirm that the architecture is set to 64-bit.
- Select USB flash drive.
- Select the correct USB drive and allow the Media Creation Tool to download Windows 11 and create the bootable installation drive.
- When the process is complete, safely eject the USB drive.
The Media Creation Tool erases all existing content from the selected USB flash drive.
Step 2: Download the Elo Driver Pack
Download the Elo driver pack before beginning the Windows installation. This ensures the required network, graphics, audio, chipset, and other system drivers are available if Windows does not install them automatically.
- Locate the Elo product number and model designation on the Backpack product label.
- Go to the Backpack with Intel Driver Packs page .
- Select the Windows 11 driver pack that matches the Backpack generation, such as G2/G3 or G5.
- Review and accept the Elo End-User License Agreement.
- Download the driver pack.
- Copy the downloaded ZIP file to a separate USB flash drive.
Keep the driver pack compressed until Windows has been installed. Extract it to the Backpack's internal drive before installing the drivers.
Step 3: Connect the Backpack Hardware
- Make sure the Elo Backpack is powered off.
- Connect the monitor or Elo touch display.
- Connect a USB keyboard and mouse.
- Connect the Windows 11 installation USB drive.
- Connect an Ethernet cable, if available.
- Connect the Elo power adapter.
When using HDMI or DisplayPort for video, connect the display's USB touch cable to the Backpack. A video cable by itself does not carry touch data.
Step 4: Boot from the Windows Installation USB Drive
- Power on the Elo Backpack.
- Immediately press the F11 key repeatedly until the Device Boot Menu appears.
- Select the entry for the USB flash drive that begins with UEFI.
- Press Enter.
- Wait for Windows Setup to load.
If the USB Drive Is Not Listed:
- Confirm that the USB drive was created using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.
- Move the USB drive to a different USB port.
- Restart the Backpack and press F11 again.
- Confirm that the USB drive is configured for UEFI boot.
Step 5: Install Windows 11 Pro
- Select the installation language, time and currency format, and keyboard layout.
- Select Next.
- Select Install Windows 11 or Install now.
- When prompted for a product key:
- Enter the valid Windows 11 Pro product key, or
- Select I don't have a product key to activate Windows later.
- If an edition-selection screen appears, select Windows 11 Pro.
- Accept the Microsoft license terms.
- Select Custom: Install Windows only.
- At the drive-selection screen:
- If the drive displays as Drive 0 Unallocated Space, select it and then select Next.
- If existing partitions are present, delete them only when performing a complete clean installation and no data needs to be retained.
- Allow Windows Setup to copy files and install Windows. The Backpack will restart several times.
If the Backpack returns to the first Windows Setup screen after restarting, remove the installation USB drive and restart the system.
Step 6: Complete the Windows Out-of-Box Setup
- Select the country or region.
- Select the keyboard layout.
- Connect to Ethernet or Wi-Fi when prompted.
- Enter a computer name, if requested.
- Sign in using the appropriate Microsoft, work, school, or organizational account.
- Configure the required privacy and security settings.
- Allow Windows to complete the initial setup and display the Windows desktop.
Step 7: Install the Elo Driver Pack
- Insert the USB drive containing the Elo driver pack.
- Copy the driver-pack ZIP file to a folder on the Backpack.
- Right-click the ZIP file and select Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Review any included README or installation instructions.
- Run the provided driver installation programs as an administrator.
- Restart the Backpack when prompted.
If the driver pack does not include a single automated installer, install the required drivers from the extracted folders or use Windows Device Manager to locate the appropriate driver files.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click the Windows Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Review the device list for unknown devices or yellow warning symbols.
- If a device is missing a driver:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Browse to the extracted Elo driver-pack folder.
- Enable Include subfolders.
- Select Next.
Step 8: Install Windows Updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available security, quality, and driver updates.
- Restart the Backpack when prompted.
- Repeat the update check until no additional required updates are offered.
Step 9: Activate Windows 11 Pro
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Activation.
- Confirm that the activation status displays Active.
- If Windows is not activated, select Change product key and enter the valid Windows 11 Pro product key.
A Windows 11 Pro product key cannot activate Windows 11 Home or another Windows edition. Confirm that Windows 11 Pro was selected during installation.
Step 10: Verify System Operation
Confirm that the following components operate correctly:
- Windows 11 Pro is activated
- Device Manager does not show unknown devices or warning symbols
- Ethernet and Wi-Fi connect properly
- Bluetooth operates properly
- Audio output operates properly
- HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C video output operates properly
- Touch input operates properly when connected to an Elo touch display
- All USB ports recognize connected devices
- Windows Update reports that the system is current
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| USB drive does not appear in the boot menu | Recreate the USB drive with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool, try another USB port, and confirm that the UEFI USB entry is selected. |
| Windows reports that the computer does not meet Windows 11 requirements | Enter the BIOS and verify that the system is using UEFI boot, TPM 2.0 is enabled, and Secure Boot is enabled. Do not use unsupported registry or hardware-requirement bypasses. |
