Microsoft Edge Kiosk Mode Limitations on Windows 10 LTSB and LTSC

Customers configuring interactive kiosks or Point-of-Sale (POS) systems frequently inquire about deploying single-app Kiosk Mode using Microsoft Edge on Elo Windows 10 devices.

Many Elo touchcomputers are factory-imaged with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB / LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel). By Microsoft design, earlier LTSC releases do not include or support the native Universal Windows Platform (UWP) Microsoft Edge browser or the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft Official Architecture Policy

Official Note from Microsoft Documentation:

"Kiosk configuration — Microsoft Edge has many improvements specifically targeted to Kiosks, however Edge is not available in the LTSC release of Windows 10. Internet Explorer is included in Windows 10 LTSC releases as its feature set is not changing, and it will continue to get security fixes for the life of a Windows 10 LTSC release. If you wish to take advantage of Kiosk capabilities in Edge, consider Kiosk mode with a semi-annual release channel (SAC / General Availability Channel)."

Recommended Kiosk Solutions on LTSC Systems

  1. Option A: Run Internet Explorer 11 in Kiosk Mode:
    On systems utilizing legacy internal web applications or compatibility views, launch IE11 in fullscreen kiosk lockdown using the -k command-line switch:

  2. Option B: Deploy Standalone Chromium-Based Browsers via Startup Script:
    Install the standalone installer for Microsoft Edge Enterprise (Chromium) or Google Chrome and launch via Windows Startup/Shell Launcher using full-screen kiosk flags (e.g., msedge.exe --kiosk https://yoururl.com --edge-kiosk-type=fullscreen).
  3. Option C: Transition to Windows 10 Pro:
    If your deployment requires Windows Assigned Access single-app kiosk provisioning, upgrade the OS from Windows 10 LTSC to Windows 10 Pro.
✔ Summary: The absence of Microsoft Edge in legacy Windows 10 LTSC is an intentional Microsoft architectural restriction aimed at mission-critical OS stability. Use standalone kiosk command-line switches or deploy Windows 10 Pro for full modern Edge kiosk features.
